High temp salt

Saw a demo on heat treating with high temp salt. Got to give it a try.
Have seen several articules on a do it yourself mix of 1/2 sodium chloride and 1/2 calcium chloride.
I can find the sodium and ice melt was suggested for the calcium but ice melt has potassium chloride and magnesium chloride in it.
Any sugestion on where to find a purer source??

I fail to see why KCl or MgCl would be a problem.

Haven't tried it. Just speaking from a chemist's perspective. All 4 salts (NaCl, KCl, MgCl, and LiCl) have nearly the same melting point and similar chemical properties.

OK thanks for the info.
Supposedly adding calcium chloride to sodium chloride lowers the temp at which the salts liquify.
When I get my unit done I'll try some.

Try a tractor tire repair service the ones that fix your tractor tires. they use calcium chloride liquified to weight the tires down and not freeze like water. you could buy a coffe can for 5 or 10 bucks I know this because my dad owns a service station and they have it on hand.
