Not to sidetrack this build but I have a #5 due around 4/26/07 (originally 2/15).

It will be my first #5 and my largest (blade length) Randall yet; Everything else I have is between 4" and 5 1/2".

It will also be my first nickel silver hilted Randall, first green Randall, first border patrol Randall and first all black spacered Randall.

I don't think I've anticipated one this much since my first one.

This one will be a user! My current users are a #3-5 a #26 and a #8.

The specs are:

6" S/S
NS Hilt
Green canvas micarta Border Patrol handle
All black spacers
Wrist thong
Thumb notches (standard)
Black sheath with hone pocket

..I think the idea to not worry about the five option limit and just go ahead and build like we want and THEN decide which options to drop is a good one.

A 6" SS blade sounds good to me.

fifth........

"Also ideal for yachtsman and sailors for general boating purposes"......from the catalog.

With that in mind and knowing what the marine envrionment can inflict, I vote for a stainless blade......6".

Marine use

Welcome Laukia,
Good to see a new name on the work crew. Yes: Indeed the Model #5 would make an excellent all-around useful tool on a boat. (something I know a bit about) I believe it would call for a micarta handle, probably with some shape to it, i.e. "Border Patrol".."Commando".."Single Finger Grip"..or regular finger grips. Green canvas or some orange "G-10" would be my picks as they give you a little less "slickness", have a bit more texture to them and of course are bullet-proof for holding up under adverse conditions. I would think a 5" blade would serve best, even though the build seems to be leaning towards a 6". It will be interesting to see how many "curves" this build will take! Anyway: Welcome to the forum! Best, Captain Chris Stanaback

I think a 6" stainless works well. I like the border patrol grip handle. I am intrigued by the teal micarta showing up and would be in favor of something bright. Thanks,Tom # 3081

How about a 4" stainless with stag. This leaves lot's of other options.

Talking

Friends,

I would like to see a 5" SS for the blade length. I like Jeff's and others idea of "just build it" as we see fit, then refine the options down to 5. I like the green micarda, (from Treemans) to be the handle material.

Did you know??

Crew,
The dark green from Jim Behring, aka.."Treeman", is called green tenite micarta. It works well, but is a bit more slick than some might like for marine use.
Also: Did you know that a 4" "Small Camp & Trail" can have micarta "substituted" for the stag..and, in many cases is not a "chargeable" opton! If the shop-supplied micarta is used, it gives you: Thumb notches and a micarta handle...and 5 options left! As long as we're throwing ideas out there, I just thought ya'll would like to know. Best, The "Captain"

I think the 4" would work better for me and since I'm going to win this knife I guess thats what we need. I think that shop green micarta would be better than stag if not a chargeable option. Hey you luckers if you don't get in on the build you can't win this knife away from me. Come on join in it's fun.

The 4" blade and factory supplied handle material is a good idea for this build, it leaves us with 5 options left for other things. But, I would personally like to see where this is going before making any desicions. These builds have been great so far and I learn a ton from them. This one is certainly shaping up to be another great one.

I will throw my hat into the 5" SS blade and a micarta handle, It's a start!

Raindog has a GREAT Plan.
Screw the Option thing for now, than deal with it later!!!!

I am in the 5" Blade & SS Camp.
6" is just too big for a user in my opinion.
