Heat Treating Small Parts
Hello Everyone,
I have some very small parts for an auto that I am working on and they need to be heat treated. I have a paragon knifemaker's kiln and have been doing some blades but was wondering if there is any special care needed for small parts? The steel is A2 and I have the hardening temperature and tempering info, but I am wondering about time @ hardening temp? Any help in calculating this and any other pointers on treating small parts, would be appreciated! Thanks! Chris S. |

The rule of thumb for hardening A2 and other tool steels is to soak at 1 hr. per inch of thickness, to be sure the steel all comes up to temp (inside) and reach the transformation phase.
For small knife parts, for instance a back spacer, an hour isn't necessary. It won't take long to soak thru. I'd recommend 30 minutes as a soak period. 20 minutes is probably enough time. Wrap the parts in stainless foil to prevent decarburization. Remove the foil immediatey when you take the packaqe out of the furnace to speed the quench. |
