sub hilt stick tang

I'm in the process of making a sub hilt with a stick tang I plan to jb weld all thread on and run all the way through the handle. I have two questions does the stick part of the 440c that I'm attatching to the all thread need to be softer than the blade? Also what do the dimensions of the stick coming off the blade need to be (as in how tall) is 3/8" enough or do i need to go to half inch? Any help would be appreciated along with any tips for doing a sub hilt. Thanks guys

The stick part doesn't have to be any softer that the blade. The size of the stick should be the same or a bit taller than the all thread.

That's the good news. The bad news is that JB Weld is not going to hold the stick and all thread together. You will have to weld it or you can create a mechanical link. I used to take a 3/8" aluminum rod, slot it, and pin it to the stick. Then, screw the all thread into the other end of the aluminum rod (which has been previously drilled and tapped). I say 'used to' do that. Then I figured out it was a lot of trouble and would never be as strong as simply making the stick long enough to go through the handle in the first place. It really isn't much more expensive either, especially when you realize how much a broken knife is worth ....

Appreciate the help Mr. Rogers. The reason I didn't make the stick long enough to go all the way through is i don't have any dies to thread the other end of the stick. I'll give your "old way" a shot. Sure glad you posted that or i would have been out one knife and up one fishing weight.
