I agree 100% with Nathan. Gene's video is worth every penny. He explains very clearly not only what he is doing but why, and the quality of the video image is very good throughout. It was nice to see that not everything goes perfectly for a pro all the time either. You end up saying "I can do that" which says alot about Gene's teaching ability. So it is "two thumbs up" from me too. Three quick questions Gene: 1) You mentioned etching mokume to make the pattern more distinct. With an acid? 2) Would nitrogen work as well as argon to displace air in the foil wrap? 3) You hand sanded to a mirror surface "dry." Why not use water or a light mineral oil. I seem to get a better cut if I sand wet. Thanks! John |

Nathan, Thank you. I had fun making it too. John, I'm glad you're enjoying it. 1. Ferric acid (etching solution) from Radio shack. Most any mild acid will work. 50/50 with water. 2. Any inert gas will work. Pencil shavings work also. As the wood burns up it consumes all the oxygen from the envelope. 3. Wet sand to cut yes (old scratches) but I dry sand to polish. The lubricant washes away the dust and paper cuts deep scratches and continues to do so. Dry sanding, the paper loads up and cuts less deep with each stroke until a slur effect is achieved. It blends more then grains for a finer finish (on ATS-34). |

Thanks for the answers Gene. All make sense. And again for the video. Best, John |
