I know I'm late to the conversation but vinegar works great for removing rust from steel you let set around to long and can even remove the rust from an old file, saw blade or whatever the more or deeper the rust the longer you let it set. I usually spray it of with a garden hose and use a brass wire wheel on my grinder and it can make an old piece of metal shine.
