anyone have a good resource for Ebony scales / blocks ?

You might want to consider African Blackwood. It's much less likely to check than Ebony. The last I got was from NC Woods which also lists on Ebay. It was two sticks of turning wood that had some defects in them but they left plenty of good wood to use. You could also check with Alpha Knife Supply. They may also have Ebony scales if you are really set on them. Other online sites that market turning wood may have both or either too.

Don't know if you have Woodcraft stores there in Canada, but I am sure they do mail order. I bought a very nice piece of 2"x2"x18" for $57US on sale a few months back. It was normally $81. Their website lists numerous pieces of Ebony and other woods in turning sizes, perfect for Bowie handles. Hope this helps out. Good luck!

doug certainly makes a good point concerning blackwood. its pretty rare; most is used in oboe reeds & parts for violins, eic.in 1890 to 1910 was referred to as the real ebony. this stuff is so durable that old steamships used it for bearings. cranky72
