Just ordered KMG

I finally ordered a KMG and would like to thank everyone for convincing me and my wife to go for the best.
It's a Platen Grinder Package plus small wheel attachment and a 1" small wheel.
I also bought a WEG brand enclosed 1.5 HP motor on eBay for only $100. This baby weights 68 lb.!

Can you guys recommend me something other than WD-40 to prevent rust? Preferably not too sticky.
I am just 10 blocks from the Pacific Ocean and it's pretty foggy and moist most of the time.

BTW What's the cheapest place to get some O-1? I'll be practicing a lot now!

Thanks

Have it powder coated to protect your investment. Shouldn't be too much. Just check the yellow pages.

Then again, I've never heard any complaints about a KMG rusting. Could it be that it's made from stainless?

I used a rattle can of wheel coating on my home-built. I just kept spraying on coat after coat until it was gone. Bought it at Autozone for about five bucks.

Enjoy the new toy!

Andy

Good choice. Well worth every penny! Now just be sure to get quality belts, I used TRUGRIT.COM. Yes they can rust. So far I've just used WD-40 and a test coating of linseed oil on the top of the tension arm. It doesn't look pretty, takes forever to dry but would do the job.

Wonderful machine and if you ever have any questions Rob is there to help. Having a good machine makes it much easier to get to the next level.
Have fun.

Good choice! You won't be sorry with that machine!

I'm in the "rattle-can" crowd. I stipped down my KMG, bought a couple can of the fancy metallic maroon spray paint and went after it! Whatever you coat it with, give it a light sanding to rough up the surface so whatever you use will stick.

http://www.toolanddie.com for O1, paint for the KMG. The KMG is sold "in the white" which is a machinist term for bare naked steel with no finish and it will rust....

Kmg Rust

First off, let me say I'd have a hard time making knives if I was only 10 blocks from the ocean. Think I'd be down at the ocean instead.

I chose to paint my KMG with Rustoleum within a week of purchase. It had already started to rust and I live in Atlanta!!!! The Rustoleum has worked well for the last year and 1/2 but I think I'd want a professional powder coating if I lived near the ocean. You also need to consider using the thinnest coat possible for the tooling arm or it will not fit in the machine or will jam up. I used a little more than I should have and still have to use a rubber mallet to break it free on occasion.

Good Luck.

Philip

Thumbs up Congratulations !

You made a good choice when you got a KMG I love mine. Now, start saving for the rotary platten , it can make life much easier. Powder coating would be the most durable and rust resistant finish, and once it's done you shouldn't ever have to do it again. Have fun!

This may be a solution also. Thinking about the salt from the ocean.

I would think that a good coat of wax for the tooling arm where it slides into the machine. But on everything else, Im with the group. Paint it!

Dont think you will be sorry about your investment!!

God Bless
Mike
