A scrap skinner.

This is a little skinner I made out of an old machete. The machete was one of those six dollar jobs from WalMart, but it was decently springy. This steel can be hardened, but not to the point where you would want to try to make a folder back spring or anything out of it, so I made a small fixed blade. Oddly enough, it is very very sharp and seems to hold an edge pretty well.

Anyone have any idea what kind of steel that might be?

The scales are bloodwood and the fittings are nickel silver.

Nice!

Couple of quick questions-

What did you use to cut up the machete, and did you do the hardening yourself or send it out?

Thanks for the nice comments!
bullsi1911:
I first annealed it with my mapp/oxy torch to the best of my ability, then drew the outline I wanted on some paper, glued it to the machete and went to town with my hacksaw.

After I finished my grinding, I heat treated it with my mapp/oxy torch which was a total pain in the ass. As soon as I find a portable small gas forge, I'm getting it.

Tempering was done with a propane torch.
