Finished a few today. My first knives of 2013.
I had 4 people ask me to make neck knives Like the ones I gave out as Christmas presents. I finished the 4 and one other for me today. I used the money from the 4 I sold to buy an anvil. (I've been using a borrowed one.)
Fed Ex being the slowest means of shipping on the planet (giving the one toed sloth delivery company a run for their money) I won't have material to make sheaths till friday. Anyway, Here is the lot. Just some neck knives out of 1095. And one more elk horn knife I made also from 1095. I sold the last one I made for myself. so I needed to make a new one for me. I made the guard and cap put of a piece of round stock I had laying around, and I won't be doing that again. Now I know why they charge 8 bucks for a guard lol Took massive amounts of work to get them cut out and shaped and still need to polish them. I think I'll just buy guards or buy some softer stock to work with. I might be a little crazy but each time I went on NJ steel Baron site to order some 1084, I didn't do it because the shipping was so High. Twice as high as other places I have ordered blade steel from. But I finally decided to do it and to make it worth the shipping I ordered 3 48" sections of 1084. 2 in 1 1/2 and 1 in 2 inch. I also ordered a 36 inch piece of 1095. So I should be good on blade steel for a while. What to make, What to make???? Ideas? Last edited by ricky_arthur; 01-02-2013 at 06:32 PM. |

My husband and I use the Steel Baron exclusively. As the old saying goes, 'You get what you pay for.' Our 1095 is German-made and consistently fabulous. Steel Baron's customer service is bar-none as well. Aldo even delivered our order in person twice when we were in New York.
We order a lot more than two pieces at a time, so our shipping costs don't seem overly high. Steel is unfortunately heavy and expensive to ship. Small US companies are up against the wall, since they can't afford to give the same breaks on shipping for small orders that bigger companies dealing in Chinese steel can, especially if the buyer wants to receive it quickly. Unfortunately for US steel producers, China is making some really good steel these days. 1095 isn't even produced in the US anymore. Luckily for us, the name 'Solingen' still means something to many people who use and/or collect 1095 knives. |
