" The Airborne Guys"

During the dry season, they would conduct exercises with large scale airborne drops at designated LZ's.The 101st and 82nd Airborne would drop trucks, tanks, big guns, rations, etc., and
a whole bunch of people..the sky would be dark with planes and chutes..our job was to gather up those who had drifted too far off the LZ and give 'em a ride back to their unit. There were always
a few broken legs, 'cause in the dry season that ground would get as hard as concrete.
They would have mock battles for a week or so, then go back home.We could usually find
unused smoke grenades and stuff that we weren't supposed to have...we would use this stuff
on our "enemies" when we had our own jungle warfare operations.Made a lot of people mad....

A friend of mine was in an airborne unit pre-Vietnam. During a practice like this, a parachute on one of the Jeeps they were dropping failed to deploy. The Jeep had an M40 recoilless rifle mounted on it and the rifle just about cut the jeep in 2 pieces. They got their asses chewed out royally, despite no proof that they did anything wrong. Chewed out or not, everybody thought it was a pretty cool amount of damage to see.

Yep...two images that remain with me from that drop were a tank and a trailer full of c-rations.The tank had
4 giant cargo chutes on it , one came completely loose-it hit the ground so hard it literally bounced about 10 ft in the air and lost a track. The trailer's chute malfunctioned and hit so hard, we picked up c-rations 500 yds from where it hit.The trailer was about half as tall as it had been....
