Refractory Recipe with common ingredients?

I've been digging around for awhile, and sure there are many DIY refractory recipes, but most use portland cement which from what I read is dangerous. I'm trying to keep this to a home depot or similar shopping trip, but I would like to buy dry ingredients and mix myself. I'm thinking of building a forge and maybe some kind of foundry for melting metals. Most of the links and info I find for supplies are outdated.

Theres no doubt it can be done, but the time, money, and effort you expend will be far beyond that of just buying either a commercially available castable refractory, or some ceramic fiber blanket.

I've been doing this for 25+ years, and have seen MANY people waste a lot of time and money wanting to make their own refractories (myself included). The biggest issue I've seen is the low insulation value of the creations, and its durability.....general it takes far more "fuel" to create the heat needed, and it lasts for 1-2 "firings" and then its a wreck. Although I can understand the want of making your own refractory, its simply a loosing proposition.

I agree 100% with Ed. If you need a source for refractory try High Temperature Tools and Refractory. They sell a couple of different castable refractories, insulating board, ceramic fiber matting and other things need to build a forge or furnace. The castable refractory mixes can be shipped in 5lb boxes and upward.
