soldering guard

I tried to solder my first guard last night. What a reck. I turned my knife black, brass pink, and fingers red. Solder got all over everthing, inluding my arm. I have read every thread, tutorial and book I could get my eyes on and no luck. I don't expect it to be perfect my first time but I don't see how the whole experience could have been any worse aside from burning my knife making shack down.

While I am not sure if I am ever going to try it again I would like to know how good the guards are that are pinned on. Can JB weld be used to prevent moister from getting in and rusting? I saw a tutorial on solderless guards, does anyone know where it is?

Thanks
Matt deClercq

Whats wrong with that? Sounds about tipical for a first attempt. Soldering has its own learning curve. Some important things to know is, match your solder and iron tempature. Use good flux. Low temp solder is easier to use. Keep your pieces clean and flux well. It helps to practice on some similar scrap pieces first till you get it down. You are not alone. Everyone has some funny solder stories. here is the tut you asked for. Good luck.

Take a look at "soldering a guard" by Bruce Evans while you are there. He has some good tips on clean-up. It is harder for me with a torch than it is with an iron.

An iron?

I have read both tutorials. The solderless method looks appealing but I'm sure it is very hard to get a pressure fit with a drill, hack saw and file. The soldering faq hasn't changed from the last couple times I have read it. I'll practice again when I have a couple guards and blades made.

although they are talking about soldering electrical connections, this article has some key elements to successful soldering in it.

flux draws solder, i had a small soldering course and found out that you can move solder a long way with flux without trying. if you were using a tourch i would recommend a good iron as you have a little more control. and good flux
