new project, all american folder

thought I would share some of progress on the all american folder im working on. I started with a little hawk and was using some mighty fine olivewood but I ruined the wood and after a few days of sulking I started on this one.

The design of the all american is so much better than many others I have seen, there's 1 spring vs 2 that's stacked making things much easier to work with. there's no fit needed but some ever so slight trim needed.

This is some very nice crab apple I have on hand. I cut out a basic outline on my scroll saw and drilled oversized holes. I did the rough sculpting here with a dremel tool. am going to let it sit for a few days then finish it. In this everything is just sitting there, no glue, no peening and no washers. just basic layout to see how things will look in the end.

Photo's are not that good as I was going more for basics rather than artistic.

So any comments or suggestions that would help improve things?

Hi Ed:

Nice knife. May I ask if it is a kit and if so where you purchased it? It does look hand made though. I like the name.

Steve,

Go to knifekits.com and look for the all american lockback kit. It is a very nice little kit.

Ed, it looks like that is coming along nicely.

Yes this is a kit.

http://www.knifekits.com/store/s-pag...main.htm~smain

It's a very good quality kit to I might add. In the other kits I have looked at, and bought, many will have 2 springs that's sandwitched together, most of them are warped and takes and act of congress to make them fit flush, then there's still gaps. This kit fits flush but you will have to smooth the edges but that can be expected.

I really like how this crab apple looks and just fortunate that I have some more blocks to cut from. The #1 problem I have had is the pins, add that to what I said above about the multiple layers of springs and you have a nightmare.

Hi Ed:

Your knife looks good. Your fit and finish look tight. The all American is a nice kit. It is the first and so far only kit I have put together. I had some elk antler so I used it for the handles (scales). This would make a nice knife for anyone. I am thinking about trying to put together another one. I wish they said what size pins came with the kit, as I would like to order some mosaic pins for this kit. Looking forward to seeing your finished knife.

Hello,

This is from tonight. I did some detailed sanding and some slight shaping. reamed out the pin holes to fill with sawdust and epoxy plus some peening. This is with a single coat of tung oil. I plan on bring out some more texture and contrast then seal it up with permalyn from laurel mountain forge.

Is there a way to make the bolster/pivot pin hidden and have a mirror polish?

you might want to just hit the bolster with some 0004 steelwool for a satin finish. if you carry the knife in your pocket the nickel boslter won't stay polished for long.

ahh yes I was wondering how that look was done and what other looks besides the mirror polish. I will give that a shot and see how it turns out.

BTW what wood is that? looks quite good from here.

Hi Ed:

That's an awful nice knife you built. Just beautiful.

I found them on knifekits and like yours better. Your work has convinced me to try and build one.

OK here's some updates.

I did the epoxy thing to the handles, the peening thing on the pins and discovered the handle had shifted on one side because the pin was bent. It also didn't sit right but mr belt sander took care of that real quick. I also used a flapwheel to finish touch up on the wood then went to sandpaper. The wood is not 100% finished but I think at this point I can go ahead and call it for final look. All that's left is the final sealer.

After all this final work I had to reapply the finish of the god and this is what it looked like after one coat.

then one drop of my special blend

then some serious hand rubbing for a good hour.

I also noted on different background there's different detail present, and even color. It's an optical illusion.

The one mistake I kick myself for making is the end of the lock itself where it meets the spring. The spring is rounded and stick out but then I know it's there and look at it.
