SS Tool Wrap Specifics
It's time to buy another roll of stainless steel tool wrap for heat treating. For the past year and half, none-the-wiser to its temperature rating, I've been using 0.002" 304 SS wrap. I haven't experience any ill-effects after treating over a dozen (15) stainless blades, all in the 1080?C (1,976 ?F) range.
Is there any real reason to use 309? The difference in price is substantial enough for me to query this. Regards, Dan Last edited by DanCom; 05-27-2015 at 01:25 PM. Reason: brackets on the 15 |

It is ain't broke....no need to "fix" it! If you're getting good results with the 304, and since it's less expensive, I'd stick with it. Make sure you check around....I've found the prices for the tool wrap can vary widely.

Thanks Ed.
My thoughts exactly. I read that 304 has "good corrosion resistance up to 1500?F", but I don't really care about corrosion resistance. It's the sacrificial nature of the application. I am also seeing tool wrap sold in 10", 12", 20" and 24" rolls at various lengths. It's beneficial to convert to convert to square ft. when comparing. Ranging anywhere from $2 to $5 a sq.ft. Buyer beware. Dan |
