hi all i was looking for a way to stop a carbon steel knife from rusting. cleaning drying and oilling dont seem to work and i found this webpage
http://www.knifenetwork.com/forum/sh...ackening+metal i followed the instructions but maybe i did something wrong. while boiling the knife looked black and after 15 minutes i pulled the knife out and dried and oiled it while still hot. but its not completely black kinda orange in parts looks a little like marbled this means rust can still be active and ruin the knife? what should i do? im certain i followed the instructions properly. now i have many questions to find out what happened. i hope you dont mind. i can take a photo but dont know how to put it in here.
i. does it matter which peroxide is used? at the chemist its $4 for 100ml of 3%
ii. i found i can get food grade peroxide half the cost. could i use that? i think one from chemist is for cleaning cuts etc but food grade is for cleaning or something.
iii. does % matter? like stronger has better effect?
iv. does the mixture need to stay hot during process? i think mine became cold which may have not been good.
v. during application is the rust meant to look like a marbled appearance?
vi. can is spray over a bucket and reuse the solution which drops off the knife?
vii. does it matter how red the foam becomes? my foam after i think 6th application stayed almost white.
viii. if a knife or other steel is already rusty can you just boil it for 15 minutes to make it black?
thanks
