I feel like I've stolen a Wilton Square wheel grinder, now what?

Whew! Where to start...I just picked up a steal on a Wilton Square wheel grinder and lots of extras for $300.

I am just getting started knifemaking and could sure use some help as to the best and safest way to get to know the grinder. If anyone has any suggestions, I sure would appreciate the help.

I have used one for years......I can help with a system to slow it down for finish work......It has been a real work horse for me................carl

I would look over my shoulder and make sure no one was chasing me.

I have not priced many grinders but I bought mine used with no extras (not even the essentials for that matter) and it cost me $500.

I would love to hear of any modifications you have worked the kinks out of. I just took a look at the grinder in a corner of a friend's garage and haven't inventoried what extra wheels are with it. I did take a quick peek and found approx. 30 new belts for it. It has about 20 hours on it. I can't wait to get it fired up.

I can take a picture of it and send it tues.....I mounted a pulley on the flywheel and attached a belt to a 1/3 hp. motor....It really slows it down......And works great.....total cost..$11.00 .........I used an old washing machine motor....and some scrap metal...............carl........ps......the belt can be taken off in 2 sec. to run high speed.......

How old is the grinder actually? While the Wilton grinders are still great machines, the older ones were made heavier duty. Still, you stole this machine no matter how old it is. Congrats. Now, let's see some ground blades!

Thanks for the suggestions regarding the new grinder. I really appreciate the help. I am going to follow Bob's suggestion of getting some mild steel, start grinding, and getting a feel for the grinder.

I checked out your site and the mods and will be getting a hold of you soon. Right now, the terminology and methodology is confusing. I'm in the process of working the Minister of Finance (wife) to release funds to set up some shop time with you.

I haven't picked up the grinder yet, but my guess is that it is approx. 6 years old and almost new.
