double dovetailed bolsters
I am attempting to make a damascus dagger with dovetailed bolsters front and back. Because it is a dagger the bolsters need to be parrallel so I can't do the slant thing. Has anyone any suggestions for the order that I can do this in. I need to construct and finish the blade and bolsters then etch then somehow insert the mammoth ivory scales. I can t see how I am going to get an exact fit on the scales if I do it after the rest is constructed but I can't see how to do it any earlier either. I hope this makes sense to someone, if not let me know and I will try again.

Steve, leave some extra length on the scale material (not much), and be prepared to do a lot of fitting and filing. If you take your time, you shouldn't have any trouble.

You might consider using screw construction so you can take it apart and put it back together again, etch as needed.Even works with damascus bolsters.

If you fab the whole thing up, but only clamp the end bolsters on, you should be able to see which way each of your scales wants to slide out. Take a note of that, then drill and pin your end bolsters on with the scales out, then etch and all, and I'd think that if you drilled and pinned the bolsters in the same position that they would slide in the same way as before.
Hope that makes sense, it may be founded on an incorrect idea of what it is you are trying to do... |
