I have a Roman knife that was from around 350-400 AD. The handle is some type of bone (turkey?) and the blade is in very bad shape. I am sure it would break with a flick of a finger. The handle is cracked on the other side.
Also pictured is a Roman bronze ring and a Scythian bronze arrowhead from around 400-500 BC. They had a single barb on them but it's missing on this one. |

I know I am not the only one here with an old knife. It would be cool to see some others.

A friend of mine is an attorney and goes to visit family 1-2 times a year in Israel. He has always shown me small artifacts he has picked up from reputable sources. He saw this knife and knew I was into blade smithing and bought it. The ring and arrow head are stuff he got from from previous trips.
Israel allows certain artifacts to be sold and exported. I use the knife as a constant reminder to do the best I can with my knives. The guy that made that one probably had no idea it would be in someones display case 1,600 years later. |

I have about 30 pre-6th century blades ranging from Roman folding knives to composite welded germanic small utility blades. Nothing has ever had any remnants of handle materials on it, though, so they aren't exactly "knives", just blades. I have a pretty nice greek blade from 1-3rd century, though, that is in remarkable condition for it's age. My pride and joy is a large haft-axe head circa 1300-1350 from the Danish region. Trees, sheilds, spinal columns....it could pretty much take them all out! I have some pretty cool wrought iron roman arrowheads also.
I have pics of quite a few of the welded knife blades I've posted in the historic knife section here. I'll have to look for them. I'll snap a pic of the axe head and the greek blade this evening. P.S. As for outright age, I have a bronze mesopotamian arrowhead from ~2500 BC. Last edited by Don Halter; 08-26-2009 at 04:48 PM. |

There is a crack and a small chunk missing on the other side of the handle. It could become a blade with a very small amount of wiggling.
Last spring I got this neolithic arrow head that was part of the Michael Cottingham collection. It's estimated to be around 8,000 to 10,000 years old made from a type of agate. I incorporated it in with an Ice Age necklace I made for my wife with Ancient kauri wood beads I turned and woolly mammoth ivory chip beads. One corner of our living room is a mini museum of fossils, meteorites, mammoth tusk and some arrowheads found on our pace. I love looking at and holding ancient stuff. It makes my mind wander. |

I don't have a picture, but I have a bayonet from a French Gras rifle, marked from the St. Etienne armory outside Paris, 1865. The Gras was one of the first, if not the first, military bolt action rifles.
