Tool Advice
I closed my studio a year ago and have some tools that I don't know if they will be useful as a new hobby maker.
A Uni-mat lathe (with all the accessories. It is a mini lathe that is great for small work. A dual inlet dust collector (Velocity)with adjustable hoods that allow individual positioning. A 20 ton desktop hydraulic press (Bonnie Doon), with tooling. These were used for making jewelry. I will never be a full time maker. Your opinions will be greatly appreciated. As always TIA...Teddy |

Goldsmithy...There is not a great need for the lathe in conventional knifemaking...but there have been times...
The hydraulic press is a definite keeper. In short, If your tools are bought and paid for and are not eating anything...then I'd keep all of them. You will eventually fine a use for all of them. The finishing aspect of making knives is not that far removed from making jewelry....depending upon the degree of your work. If you ever intend to do any wire inlay or mosaic pins, you may be glad you kept your tools. I have some tools that are seldom used...but when I need them...I appreciate that I have kept them. |

The press sounds like it would work well for a touch mark stamp and the lathe could probably be used for making pommel nuts. (the dust collector is always a good idea)
You can never have too many tools. Gary __________________ Gary ABS,CKCA, ABKA,KGA |
