I have always had a problem with that part of making the hidden tang knives. Hopefully I will learn something this time.

Welll, here is the next stage. I used my mill and a rotozip to make the hole in the block for the tang. loaded it up with some good devcon 2 ton 24 hour cure two part epoxy and loaded it into the hidden tang holder thingy. First time using it and it looks like it is going to work like a charm. I will let you know how it turns out.

Going off for heat treat in the morning. This is my first shot at stock removal......I definitely prefer forging. For some reason it seems to be waay harder to grind in a taper than to hammer one in.

This thing is way thin (not more than 2mm in any spot) and I've never sent anything out for heat treatment so who knows if it will survive.

The alternate knife is a 1080+ sujuhiki that is currently tempering in the oven.

Very nice, Jason! No need to stop forging but like anything else stock removal gets easier when you practice it more. You might be able to forge in a taper quicker but after that you still have to do some light grinding to remove small dents and scale (at least that's true for most makers). Total time there could even be a bit more than stock removal. There are lots of factors involved so this is all generalization, of course ...

Well I got all my blades back from peters heat treat and will be putting on some good tunes and disappearing into the garage for the weekend. I hope to have them all almost done but I will have the kith done for sure. Also was just kind of curious on everyone's progress so far. All the pictures look great and can't wait to see the final products.

My blade is finished and taped up but I had to stop to order a new end mill. The end mill will arrive this afternoon so my knife will be posted next week ...

The knife I above is out. Talked to someone at Peters ( not Brad ) who said to thinness didn't really matter ( in spite of all other research I did ). As you can expect, about two inches from the tip a severe warp starts that I haven't been able to correct. I may eventually cut it into a santoku or funayaki. Instead, I'm putting the final polishes on a forged sujuhiki, the handle is about halfway done. Will post finished pictures by the end of the wee barring any catastrophes.

Bummer. Grinding post HT might have been a way to avoid that warp. Straightening it out isn't too big a deal either if you can HT the blade yourself which, I know, you can't at this time. Re-profiling into something else sounds like a good option. Part of the purpose of this KITH is to get people familiar with stainless so, even though you didn't succeed just yet, you have learned a valuable lesson and, through sharing the story, helped others learn too.

The KITH will be perfectly happy with your sujihiji ....

I am definitely newer to knife making (this is my 6th knife) and only been doing full tangs.
So I have accepted your offer to go outside even my limited abilities. This is my first
hidden tang and making my own micarta. I am hoping to glue everything together and

Is this to end on the 15 April 2014 ? or can we extend this KITH till the End of April ? I do not see many knives posted as done & ready . I am in FL and may not be home by the 15 th Yet I have worked Very Hard on my entry for this I just had to be in FL for Father In Law .
