Hollow grinds without a "contact" wheel.
Hey guys, I've been doing hollow grinds on some of my knives with good success. They have clean grind lines and its pretty easy to do. However, I'm doing this without a contact wheel. Instead, I'm using the large diameter wheel on my craftsman 2x42. Is anyone else doing this too? Also, what is the advantage to a true contact wheel vs. what I'm doing?

If it works for you I don't know that there would be a lot of advantage to a contact wheel. But, a contact wheel is rubber coated and serrated. That helps it run cooler and cut a bit better than a smooth wheel and the rubber provides some cushion which helps to avoid waves in your grind. If you don't have any of those problems then you're good to go as long as the diameter suits you for the blade size you're working on ....

Ok, thanks Ray that answered my question. I'll probably want one someday but until I need to do hollow grinds on large knives I think I'm good with what I have.

Wow I can hardly imagine how difficult that was.
