compression spring question

I am thinking of making myself some compression and torsion springs for the making of a automatic knife. How do you go about making your compression srings and your torsion springs.
Thanks
Steve

No one seems to be in any hurry to share the secrets of a good spring.

A metal lathe, a straight mandrel, music wire, and pliers.

Why bother? Springs are cheaper'n dirt.

Don
You may have springs growing in your backyard but those of us in the great white north are having real trouble finding any. Either that or I am just not looking in the right part of the garden.

I've never made a coil spring or leaf spring but here's a link I've had in my favorites for a while. I hope there's something here for yoy!

Hi, Steve.

Can you order from MSC up there? They have anything you want on their website or catalog.

Google MSC, or Google compression spring or torsion spring and all the sources will come up.

I've made springs for applications where nothing was available commercially, but it's a lot if trouble and expense to buy the materials and make them.

Steve, if you make a button lock folder or an automatic you'll need an assortment of springs to find a suitable match for the opening spring balance with the button. You'll have to experiment with different lengths (cut off a wind at a time) and different spring materials, ie: music wire and stainless to find the right balance.

I buy all my springs from MSC in packages of 10.

Now how's that for help instead of a smart ... reply, my friend?
