Would J B Weld work to epoxy the scales to the blade?
Thanks, Reddirt |

Yes, JB weld will work. The only issue I have ever seen with it is that in some cases once its set and the knife finished, you can see a thin gray line between the tang and handle slabs on full tangs.....my guess is this is due to the heavy consistency once mixed. If the tang and slabs are not truly flat of course you'll see the gaps filled with JB.
For hidden tang knives, I think JB weld is too thick. I'm a big fan of Accra-Glass from Brownells. Its the only thing I use for "gluing" handles. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

The only place I would use it would be inside a guard fit. It is just too thick for most other knife work.

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking if JB Weld would be sufficient by itself to attach the scales to the handle. The answer to that question is 'no'. No epoxy should be used alone to attach scales to steel. Epoxies should be used along with pins or bolts.
It is true that when everything is done correctly and under the best conditions scales can be attached to steel with satisfactory results using only epoxy (JB Weld is just an epoxy). Most of the time though it simply won't hold well enough if the knife is really put to hard use ..... |

I already own some JB Weld. So, I'm going to try it on my first knife kit. I'm also going to add a little Acrylic black to it. The knife will have pins.

I use JB to seal the guard to blade on the final fitting (only seen from the back side of the guard) and for some hidden tangs. I mix a few drops of Fiebings USMC Black leather dye with it, which helps thin it quite a bit, enough to use it on Mosaic pins and such. Does extend the setup time a bit. It does well when using the vulcanized fiber liner/spacer material if you can match the color. It will hold, just the straight-from-the-tube gray is not all that attractive. On good fit-ups it shouldn't matter much. Gaps are gaps no matter what glue you use.
