DIY Camo Scales

I did a bit of an experiment on my blog with some polyester resins and fabrics, felt and cotton yarn of different sorts, clamps and so on. The net result is a pretty good product. It's a little bit flexible, tough and polishes well. Just be careful with heat from the cotton wheel in the final stages.

This is the results on my latest knife:

If you are interested, I did a basic tutorial to get you started. Hope you can visit!

Very cool! Gave me some ideas for my own "home brew" handle scales.

That's pretty cool. Almost looks like marble or some type of stone in the photo. I always wondered what would happen if you pressed thin strips of leather with resin.

I wonder if the leather would absorb the resin?

The handles look great! Totally looks like stone.

We were thinking on the same lines Dan
I did the same thing this weekend. I really hope mine looks like
yours when sanded down. I did a Camo, brown/black burlap, and
red/black paper. I found out by looking at your site, I need to make
a better press so I don't waste.

Thanks for all your WIPs on your site, very helpful !!!

Troy,

Your pieces looks good. Please let me know how your product works out as real life handle material.

For shaping I started out with 60 grit, then worked up: 100, 220, 320 then 400. Lastly a buff on a clean cotton wheel and it brings it to a polished look.
