Roughed out some "Kiridashi's" last night!

i was just playing around and ended up roughing out these! they are still alittle chubby in the waist but will get thinned out when i get some more belts for the sander!
did all of the grinding freehand they are pretty much a simmonds mill bastard cut in half.
gonna be 2 differant flavors when i'm done one old school japanese style and one just my style!

Looking good.

It's hard to tell from the pics but are they chisel ground?(only ground on one side?) If so are you left handed? If they are chisel ground just on the side shown, those are primarily for left handed people.

I like the file marks, they add character. I like to leave forge texturing on my dashis for added character. They are certainly handy little blades to have around, and probably the blade style I use the most.

Yes they are chisel ground. And no the aren't specifically for a lefty. I just happend to grind them on that side before I realized the edge should face away from me lol. These are gonna just be for displays for 2 buddy's that like Japanese stuff so I'm not really worried about it. But once again another lesson learned!

If you plan on cutting thick leather either grind bevels on both sides of the blade or use very thin stock with the chisel grind. If you use thick stock and a chisel grind it wants to cut to one side. Its not an issue with something like suede, or skimming a little off the edges of a sheath...but cutting 9oz leather it will tend to veer to one side.

I've done the same thing myself Actually to this day, even after making a minimum of a thousand of them, every once in awhile I mess up and start on the wrong side. One of those Homer Simpson moments "D'oh!"

15n20 works pretty well. We make a lot of small dashis from .060" 15n20. 1080/1095 seems to get a bit "toothier" of an edge, but theres nothing wrong with the 15n20. I just finished up a batch of keychain sized 15n20 ones before sitting at the computer.

Hondo, I'm sure your friend will love the pieces. The offhand models still work for most tasks. Looking forward to seeing the finished project.

If you don't want to see the metal behind the wrap, you can take the core out of some of the cord and wrap the empty cord flush around the handle.

I'm gonna leave the gaps so I can see through to the file work and the nice polish once I'm all done with em!
