'Late medieval iron making, the bloomery process'

As Schultz used to say - "VERRRRY Interesting"
'Late medieval iron making, the bloomery process'
a treatise on the making of iron in a bloomery and on the quality of the armour made from such iron.

It's an Adobe PDF File so you will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader

The link is the word - hier - in the middle of the sentence two lines above the English title.

Wild Rose Trading Co - Handcrafted Knife Sheaths

The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher. It celebrates the knife it houses.

A very good paper on the process and the science of it. My only objection is the authors assertion that he could not produce Iron himself to experiment with. My friend and sometimes fellow trouble maker Dan Scheid, of Flying Horse Forge has produced his own iron bloom and made a knife from it. His website details the process of it at http://home.earthlink.net/~chevalvol...orseforge.html . (click on the Iron Smelt button on the left) His concessions to modern expedience are in the making of the bloomery from a old hot water heater and using a vacuum cleaner for his air blast. However clay and a bellows would not perform that much differently. I have seen a reconstruction of viking age bloomery and the internal structure is basically the same.

Down towards the coast from me is a very talented steel maker called Mike Petersen.
He has been making iron blooms for some time now and has sent some of his steel to Japan for Glenn Waters to work with. Check out his web site.his site
