A very good paper on the process and the science of it. My only objection is the authors assertion that he could not produce Iron himself to experiment with. My friend and sometimes fellow trouble maker Dan Scheid, of Flying Horse Forge has produced his own iron bloom and made a knife from it. His website details the process of it at http://home.earthlink.net/~chevalvol...orseforge.html . (click on the Iron Smelt button on the left) His concessions to modern expedience are in the making of the bloomery from a old hot water heater and using a vacuum cleaner for his air blast. However clay and a bellows would not perform that much differently. I have seen a reconstruction of viking age bloomery and the internal structure is basically the same.
