Altho this is a beautiful set, the most interesting thing about this listing is the sellers claim to have a good close-up photo of Bill Scagel. I have not asked anyone directly, and have always took for granted what I have read, that no photos of Bill exist.

I'm back - and I'm trying to round up some info about this eBay listing and some things the seller mentions.

I saw a nice one of these sets this summer at the Scagel Hammer-In. Ron Welling had it. It had wood handles but was very handsome, very good condition etc. He was asking $4,000. I did some checking around and decided that $2,000-2,500 would represent a reasonable deal for that item. Of course, I don't really know and no one does - what's something 'really worth.'? If I'd had the money to just throw at a set like the one I saw I would limit myself to what I mentioned above. By way of shedding some light on this eBay listing or guessing what the set will bring - much less what it's 'worth' - this is all I know (for now).

Judging from the location of the seller, Dr. Lucie, Ron Welling, Doug Noren and the rest of the boys up there, are probably all aware, and have even "fingered" this set. Lucky ducks! I have not seen a nicer scagel carving set.

$6,033.00 at closeing. Beautiful set. Great pics and slide show. Impecable provenance documented. Anecdotes. All add up to an atmosphere that promotes confident bidding. Great tutorial on how to list for max return.

Seems like this item topped out at a pretty respectable level though it's still hard to know. After all Scagel's knives (good ones) can bring 25K. Also of interest, the auction was won by a sniper who had not previously bid.

Regarding the picture of Scagel the seller mentions - other than the image of Bill Scagel as an old man on the back of Harry McEvoy's booklet, I have seen one other image. Scagel is much younger in this image, a strapping fellow who looks to be in his late 20s or 30s. He is apparently standing upon some type of monument or stonework of some kind. Jim Lucie owns the picture and is saving it for his book on Scagel.

Speaking of good Scagel knives - a nice one just surfaced and I was lucky to be able to get pictures for my file. It is an 'expensive' knife and sheath from A&F for two reasons: 1) It's a fairly rare style, especially with the A&F sheath, and 2) It's in totally mint condition - as good as they come. I'll post pics later.

Wow! thanks Buddy. That is one beautiful example.
I have heard, in the collectors market, Fighters are at the top, kitchen cutlery is at the bottom. The set seems to have gone for a respectabe price, considering, a mint Worstenholm or a M. Price carving set could not come close to that.
