Cross Post: 15th Century Ballocck Dirk

This next piece is something we've been working on for knife expo. It's our take on a ballock knife. Using research from the Mary Rose, images from auction houses, the Wallace Collection, Peterson's Daggers and Fighting Knives of the Weastern World and our own ideas, my wife Sandra and I have created our version of a 15th Century Ballock Dirk.

The blade is an 8 layer star twist pattern of 1084 and 15N20. The billet was made by my students and I during a forge welding class I taught last fall. The blade is 8 5/8" long and 1 1/4" wide at the base. The phalliform ballock handle was carved by my wife from African Pink Ivory wood. Brass fittings finish out the piece.

It's a lovely interpretation of the ballock knife.
I love the area where all those influences and crossbreeds of ballock-knives/kidney-daggers and dirks come together.
