Scrimshaw
It's been quite awhile since I've had the time to scrimshaw a full coverage scene. I made time and I've been working on this piece for a couple of months. I finally finished it and thought I'd share some images. The knife is my Randall Bowles Skinner dealer special and the handle is pre-ban Elephant ivory.

what is the back side hiding?

Fuzzy,
With very few exceptions, I don't work on both sides. First, it effectively doubles the time/cost of the piece. I only work on the Randall trademark side and it would necessarily make one side the "A" side and the other the "B" side with one side always relegated to being underneath. |

Great looking work. With the pressure on to outlaw all ivory trade, pre-ban or not, I hope that you won't end up loosing it as a medium for your art. I don't even know if I would do anything with "fossilized" ivory.
Before anyone says anything about how if the ivory is already in the US then it's legal for sale, today there was an article about a shop in New York getting busted for selling illegal ivory. I wouldn't touch anything that didn't come with documentation that it's legal. Maybe not even then. Doug __________________ If you're not making mistakes then you're not trying hard enough |

Doug,
The operative word in your statement is "New York". As with soft drinks over 16 ounces, Elephant Ivory harvested before December 1972 is legal everywhere EXCEPT New York where you need to buy a permit. Here is a link to a comprehensive article on the legal aspects of working with ivory by my friend David Warther. http://www.cuemakers.org/aboutivory.php |

That Sir is awesome! As I looked down through the pics I caught the man watching out of the window.
I have always wanted to learn Scrimshaw, and work like that just really peaks my interest in the technique and makes me really appreciate the quality of such work! __________________ C Craft Customs With every custom knife I build I try to accomplish three things. I want that knife to look so good you just have to pick it up, feel so good in your hand you can't wait to try it, and once you use it, you never want to put it down ! If I capture those three factors in each knife I build, I am assured the knife will become a piece that is used and treasured by its owner! C Craft |
