skill ratings on kits?

Why is the skill level on the SG4 (fixed blade) a III, higher than the DDRII (levelII), a folder? What additional skills are involved in completing this kit? I am thinking about getting my first kit & I thought a fixed blade (to be used as a kitchen/utility knife) would be easier than a folder, am I wrong? Linda

Linda,

Welcome to our forums! Glad you asked.

I don't have a SG4 yet to give first-hand advice, but I've completed a number of the folders. I would imagine the distinction is simply because there is peening/pressing of pins involved in the fixed blade vs. screw-together construction of the folders. There is not much room for error there. Fit it once, correctly.

The folders can be taken apart many times for fitment.

Please keep us posted!

Linda,

Welcome ...and Jim's right ...

The SG4 requires some handle and bolster pin peening, but also has modifications that can be done to the grind of the blade and bolster to change the look of the finished piece, if you wanted to take it to that level. We call it a "Skill Level III" to stay consistant with our measurement of the skill needed to attempt some of these procedures. However, don't be afraid of the basic models and what's required to try one. No matter what you need or want to attempt with the final design, we're all here to help make sure you get the proper setup and explanation that you need before you make a move that you're unsure of.

Alex, all

When I see that the SG4 is rated a skill level three I have no concept of what skills are needed for this level or indeed for any level.

Could you please tell me what skills are needed at levels 1, 2, and 3.

Also, what basic tools are needed to do this kit?

Thanks

Jim B.
