Hardwood flooring for handles..
So I was cruising around looking for new flooring for the house and the thought crossed my mind that hardwood flooring might be suitable for handles. Has anyone ever used it?
Thanks, John |

I don't see why you couldn't use some walnut or maple, but I would stay away from the oak.......oh yeah and the Pergo!

:evil Hi There,
I've used "Meranti" hardwood for some handles, and I think they look great. Am not ready yet finishing the Knife ( as it's my ever first made knife!!). You can say I'm a rookie in knifemaking. Will post a pic. of it when I finished it. Used this wood as a try-out, because it's cheap compared to the usual woods for knife-handles ( and I'm learning , so I gon't wanna ruin expensive material )! It's very easy material to work with. Best Regards, A "Knifemaker-Wannabe" |

Gib,
Just my opinion. The oak would work great but is just not as atractive as maple or walnut. My 2 cents anyway. Mace __________________ ABS Journeyman Smith www.laurelrockforge.com "Ain't nothing more useless than a dull knife or a short piece of rope" |

Another reason to stay away from oak, it is very porous! You might have a hard time getting a nice finish on it. If you do use it make sure you have a lot of wax on it, otherwise the first time that thing gets wet it's gonna blow up like a baloon.

I used olive wood that i bought from some italian company. 1 square meter massive hardwood floor for 28 Euros.
Great optic! The scales are 50x150x10 mm each. Perfect for knife handles... |

I was just looking at a sample of some Kempas wood flooring I had laying around and thinking this. It's an Asian hardwood that seems very hard with a nice, tight grain. Sadly, the sample piece is a bit small for a knife handle. I plan to try finishing something out of it to see how it works, etc. I think I can get a single box pretty cheaply from Lowes or HD that would amount to a LOT of knives....

Hey all, I want to take back what I said about oak before. I have seen it used on a couple of knives and it looked great. However...I am still against the Pergo!

Look for an architectural antique store. I bought 100 year old birdseye maple flooring at a reasonable price for some of my knife handles.
