Scale forms when steel cools from critical temperatures.
It is a crust that appears due to the oxygen attacking the surface of the hot steel as it cools and shrinks. It will be present with all tool steels but some scale more than others because of the chemistry used in each steel being different. After the blades cool, you can soak them in venugar overnight to soften this shell of scale and wire brush it off in the morning. BTW, scale is a grit killer and will eat up a belt quick. If you clean the scale off before grinding your belts will last much longer. |
