quench question

i heated up a o1 blade till non magnetic then quenched in some veg. oil there was no bubbling or steam or anything my question is is this normal

Doesn't sound normal. Maybe it could happen that way if you were quenching a really small blade like a pen knife blade in a gallon or more of cold oil.

The oil should be warm, 125 degrees or so, and the blade should have significant red color to it. The quench must happen while the blade is still non-magnetic - don't let it cool down in the air while you fiddle around trying to get it aimed at the oil.

Warm up your tongs or whatever you're grabbing the blade with, especially if the blade is very small....
