Leather Book Recommendations?
Greetings,
I have just started making some sheaths and would like to get a few books on the subject or on leather work that might easily cross over to sheath work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA Shannon |

Hi Shannon and welcome-
There are many books on leatherwork that are applicable to knife sheath making but the two I would recommend first are "the Art of Hand Sewing Leather" and "The Art of Making Leather Cases vol 1". Both of theses are available from Tandy or Leather Factory. After that you can get various books on how to stamp and carve if you decide to go in that direction. Also take a look back through the Sheath making forum (make sure you go to the bottom of each main page and change the default from the last 30 days to all). There is lots of good info available. Here are links to a some tutorials I wrote that should also give you some ideas: Leather Stitching Stitching Pony Mexican Loop Knife Sheath This last will give you the basics on making a Mexican Loop style sheath, but the procedures will give you an idea of the basics. Maybe not exactly on topic, but I love looking thru books that display different styles used for sheaths, scabbards, holsters, belts etc. Last week I ran across "Packing Iron: Gun Leather of the Frontier West. " -- it's primarily guns (as the title says), but it's so well done and has so many good pictures it really inspires some "new" thinking.
Chuck, I knowyou're a history buff -- if this one isn't in your private library it should be !! Amazon has a few sellers online that have it boh new and used, about $30. Mike-My copy of Packing Iron is about worn out!
Another book that Zon puplishes is "Cowboys & the Trappings of the Old West" "The Peacemakers" by RL Wilson is also a good one. It's out of print but I've seen it for sale on ebay/half.com and Amazon __________________ Chuck Burrows Hand Crafted Leather & Frontier Knives dba Wild Rose Trading Co Durango, CO chuck@wrtcleather.com www.wrtcleather.com The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher. Now why doesn't that surprise me The design that I found pretty interesting for possible adaptation to a knife sheath was the flap-over-hammer holster, which uses a tab sewn onto the front of the holster insread of a Sam Browne post or a line snap. Might work well and look good on a bowie or large camp knife sheath.
Yes, the book is on my Christmas list Mike __________________ Trying to become the kind of man my dog thinks I am http://www.fototime.com/ftweb/bin/ft...E4E363B}&tio=0 |

I've thought about the same thing. Just not enough hours in the day.
Do you have a copy or is that what is coming for Xmas? I carry both Cowboys and Packing Iron (actually any of the Zon books) and normally sell via my online store. If any CKDer's are interested let me know by phone or email and I will sell at $35.00 plus $5.00 shipping. I know that's more than on Amazon but I can't do $30.00. __________________ Chuck Burrows Hand Crafted Leather & Frontier Knives dba Wild Rose Trading Co Durango, CO chuck@wrtcleather.com www.wrtcleather.com The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher. My son works at Amazon, so all those kinds of Christmas/birthday/Father's Day type gifts go on his list
Maybe one of those would work on a Cactus Forge piece? Mike __________________ Trying to become the kind of man my dog thinks I am http://www.fototime.com/ftweb/bin/ft...E4E363B}&tio=0 |

beads and quills
Hi guys,
Could someone recommend some references for Indian beadwork and quill work as they relate to sheaths. I am interested in designs/patterns and the actual bead and quill work technique. Also, construction methods using a rawhide inner liner and other native materials would be of interest. I'm just getting started with leather work. thanks, OldMan |

Oldman-
Check out www.crazycrow.com and www.matoska.com for beading and quillwork books. One I can recommend is "The Techniques of North American Indian Beadwork" by Monte Smith. If you plan on using brain tan hides for the cover check out www.braintan.com which has lots of resources and links. Don't know of any specific books on Indian Contruction techniques. __________________ Chuck Burrows Hand Crafted Leather & Frontier Knives dba Wild Rose Trading Co Durango, CO chuck@wrtcleather.com www.wrtcleather.com The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher.
