Contact Wheel
Hi,
My contact wheel is rounded off on the edges. What is a good way to square it back up? Has anyone ever had the rubber replaced on one at Chicago rubber? Thanks, Doug Adams John 3:16 |

Hi Doug, the square the edges, the wheel has to be turned down or re-treaded. If it's a Bader wheel, you can send it to them and they will tell you if it needs to be resurfaced or if they can just turn it down. Last I talked with them, it was $20 to turn down an 8" wheel. They send their wheels out to Chicago rubber for resurfacing, afik.

Doug, the first thing I did when I got my Square Wheel 19 years ago was put a radius, about 1/8", on each corner of the wheel, and did the same when I replaced it with a Rietveldt wheel 3 years ago. I use those radii to help form a radius at the bevel's plunges. If I want a more sweeping plunge line the radius on the wheel makes it a lot easier to form it than a sharper corner would. So I don't know that I'd want to actually remove those radiused corners, just make them even.
My wear plate on my flat platen also has a 1/8" radius on each edge. David __________________ Broadwell Studios LLC Fine Art Knives & Writing Instruments http://www.david.broadwell.com |
