first 2 real folders

Hey guys aint been on in a few day my computer got all messed up. but I been working on these, not much to see only one pic I took a couple but they came out kinda fuzzy. I had done a couple prototypes using aluminum for the liners following rays tutorial (wich helped tremendously!) then the red and black one was made with titanium liners it has red g10 and marbled carbon fiber. 440c blade. The 2nd one is a flipper design opens similar to a spring assisted knife but no spring only bearings. copper carbon fiber shed and lightning strike carbon fiber (can ya tell I am on a carbon fiber kick) I took what I learned on the first and adapted some things to make it work as a flipper. The bearing system is a bunch of loose 1/16th balls that sit in a pocket by the pivot. its similar to the IKBS system. I guess you have to be licenced to call the blades IKBS so I cant but basicly the same thing. I am working on one now using caged berings. the loose bearings is a bit of a pain.

They look really good for first efforts. Be sure to use that ball bearing knife for every dirty job you can find. Be interesting to know if it will still function after getting blood or fruit juice in the bearings...

Well cool! Those folding things are mysteries to me. Way to go, it looks like things are moving right along!

yeh i thought about how dirty that thing could get i talked to 2 other makers one uses caged bearings always has and has told me they hold up better than what he thought they would the other maker is actually in a video i got of how to do it with the loose bearings i talked to him on the phone and he told me that yeh if you really treat them bad they will need to be cleaned but if you don't put them in the dirt to much they should be ok he also told me to use wheel bearing grease to lube them he has found that works better and he hasn't had to clean them as much as a thinner lubrication. however i thought about this and unless youre selling them who is good with there hands and doesn't mind a bit of work cleaning i think caged bearings are the way to go with the loose bearings you have about 15-20 lil tiny balls loose on either side of the blade putting them in is a pain where as the caged bearings all the bearings are put togather into one piece MUCH easier to handle!

WNC GOATER....this was all a mystery to me about a month ago maybe a lil less, ray has a tutorial that really makes it black and white very easy explanation. going from there to doing a flipper to a lil adapting of things stop pin in front not back but same basic steps.....i thought this was all out of reach not having a mill i don't remember who but someone told me you need a mill to do folders when i first started making knives....deffinitly not true. after the one i am working on now i think i am going to try a spring assisted one, just to try...but these flippers aren't all that hard i had a couple of problems getting it to open easily but re checked everything and worked it out

Thumbs up Good Job Dave.

They look great, especially for your first ones they are even better. I see what you mean about the carbon fiber kick.lol I tend to use my best materials after I get the kinks out, they are good looking enough now and the bottom one has an unusual profile, more like a skinner. Something I do believe it will excel at as you have your 440C HT down pretty good. As for cleaning them, spraying them out with WD-40 is still a workable old standby. Dave did you use titanium liners on the second knife or did you go with the 410 like I suggested for the ease of working with the prototype?

You are certainly right about not needing a mill for making folders. A drill press and careful work goes a long ways. It is just like driving on ice, know where you're going, go slow, be very careful and know what your next move will be. Good job again Dave.

thanks jim, both of these had titanium liners, I did order some 410 just haven't got it yet I think ill get it Saturday. the first one the titanium was .062 the second much thicker it was .1 I actually like the thicker stuff I talked to a couple makers that make a lot of flippers and one said he uses .098 the other uses .1 the "flipper build video" I got they used .098. I thought it would be really thick but its not that bad gives a lil more room to counter sink screws some guys do use mills to make the pocket for the bearing but I did it with a counter bore worked great, that's another thing that the thicker stuff helps so you can make those pockets all in the liners or all in the blade or a lil with both. from what I have been told is everyone does it slightly different and to play around with it and see what works the best for me IF you use the thinner stuff you have to make the pocket in the blade....once I figure out wich way works best then I might adjust the thickness of the liners the .1 gives me the freedom to play with it a lil.

Makes sense Dave.

Doing the countersink/bore is definitely easier with a thicker liner and a good idea. I made my first folder with teflon washers and no counterbore on the blade or liners, just a real tight fitting pivot bolt (.0005 clearance). A lot of hand fitting too, but beware if you open it up as you don't want all those little bearings going all over.LOL I would definitely use the sealed bearings and maybe will on the next folder I decide to make versus the teflon/bronze washers.

yeh the first one has no bearings I used bronze washers no counter bore.....and yeh I had to take it apart and put it back togather soooo many times and once you get all those ball bearings in there it becomes quite a mess.
