Filet / Carving Knife
Hello All,
I wanted to share a project I finally completed. I've been working on this for some time. I asked my Dad what type of knife he wanted me to make for him as a Christmas gift. Naturally, he chose one of the most difficult knives I have ever tried to make: filet knife to use in Florida. I was happy to push the limits of my ability, and learned a whole lot during this. I ruled out stainless for several reasons and initially began using O1, but after cutting it out and starting to HT it, I decided to change to 1084 because of the springy nature of the 10 series steel. So I heat treated to 58 Rc on the edge, and 45 Rc on the spine. used a checkering file for jimping. brass bolsters, and stabilized Swordfish Bill for the scales to follow the fish theme. much to my frustration, I blew out a couple pin holes, and its not as flexible as i would have liked, but I stopped grinding a little early, could have taken a few more passes...its still pretty flexible. I ground a relief off about the top 1/4 or 1/3 of the spine to prevent dragging and binding. Overall I'm pleased with the outcome of the project. Hope you like it (Dad sure does!) Comments welcome! Thanks for looking __________________ AT "We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And watch where the chalk-white arrows go To the place where the sidewalk ends." Shel Silverstein |

Nice! So that's what stabilized swordfish bill looks like. I like it, it has kind of an ivory look to it. BTW, I also like to fish and I prefer a knife without too much flex, so you did a good job.

Well Done Alex !!!!
I remember you telling me about this knife that you wanted to build last summer. So glad to see that you got it all together. Looks excellent! I really like the personality that you put into the handle. Can't wait to catch up in the shop again. |

Thank you Gentleman. I appreciate the kind words! Jeremy, this whole knife making thing has turned out to be an outlet for my artistic side, thanks for noticing!
The swordfish bone was very easy to work with. Jim I hadn't noticed it until you pointed it out, it does look like ivory. You cant see it but, on the inside there are these cool pockets (which are now full of epoxy) I understand fill with fish oil while the animal is alive to judge water depth, sort of like our inner ear. Troy, it was a long time coming - I never said exactly which Christmas it was going to be given and yes sir, come on over. My little shop is ever in development! __________________ AT "We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And watch where the chalk-white arrows go To the place where the sidewalk ends."
