New Knife maker (stock remover)

Hey guys! Been using your forum for about 2 months. Just started making my own blades, just wanted to introduce myself, my names Brandon I'm in San Antonio Texas and I here are some of my first knives! They're 1075 from admiral, heat treated to non-magnetic then held there for a little bit and quenched in canola oil. Then tempered in my oven at 450 for 2 hours. Not very good at putting an edge on them, but I love making them and learning! I didn't hand sand them till all the grind marks were out, but (as a cop out) I think it gives them character lol. Anyway, just sayin hey!

Welcome to the forum Brandon! Looks like you're off to a pretty good start. Your handles look especially good.

The next step is to test your blades and see if your heat treat really worked. This means how well they hold an edge all the way through to how difficult they are to break. For instance, stab them into a tree stump and pry them out sideways - did the tip snap off? Too hard. Did the tip stay bent? Too soft. Better to do that type of testing now before you put a lot of effort into cleaning up the finishes ...

Brandon,

Welcome. I think those blades look pretty good. I like the shapes. You have a good grasp on the processes too. It will be great to see more pictures as things progress.

You find it way easier to get the scratches out before heat treatment.

Dan

Good looking knives. I wouldn't, however, go up to 450? for a temper. I would save that for a steel with around 1% carbon in a blade that I wanted to create more toughness in, as opposed to hardness. For 1075 I would probably start out at 400? and check the blade for proper temper.

Doug
