solingen steele
ive been working with trident, henkel and various thrift store
finds for 20 years now.(in restaurant kitchens) but i know little about them aside of ofcorse that solingen is a place in germany and the terribly helpful phrase X50CrMoV15

there also tends to be high carbon and stain less varieties
just one of those things iv been wondering about

Here is a cross-reference chart that shows some German steels. Your specific one isn't mentioned, but from looking at some of the other German names for steel compared to what they are, I'd guess your X50CrMoV15 steel has approximately 40-60 points of carbon, which doesn't get at hard as most knives but that's common on chef knives since chefs tend to use sharpening steels alot which work better with softer. Also it should have some chrome and moly and maybe some vanadium. Someone else might know the exact alloy makeup, but hopefully this will help.

Here's a link to a german steel chart.

http://www.metallograf.de/start.htm?.../4116/4116.htm

Give it some time to load the page.

The German "Werkstoffnummer" for X50CrMoV15 is 1.4116.

This text on the page means:

"Rost- und s?urebest?ndiger Stahl : Hochwertige Schneidwaren , chirurgische Instrumente
H?rten : 980 - 1030 ?C (?l oder Luft) Weichgl?hen : 750 - 850 ?C"

Rust- and acidresistant Steel : highgrade cutlery , surgical instruments

Hardening : 98.... (oil or air) Annealing : 7.......

On the main chart are most of the other german steel names and their alloy percentages.

www.metallograf.de/werkstoffkartei/auswahl.htm

I hoped that this helped you a bit.
