New to the forums from NC
Hi my name is Fermin, soon after coming back from Iraq i decided to take up a hobby to keep my mind off the war so I "YouTube" How to make knives. I began making knives as therapy for my PTSD, believe it or not to me is relaxing and I totally enjoy it, except for the burns, cuts and bruises... But that?s all part of making knives right? So far I've made a "DIY" forge, got several machines off craigslist (sanders, grinders, files, etc. etc.) and visited the local Wood Shop. I have made several knives using and experimenting with different types of steel and metals. I?m really interested in learning more about it, I looked through the forums and so far I?ve picked up a thing or two. Any advice will be welcome, I would like to get better at what I?m doing, some of my friends think I?m doing a great job and they have actually purchased some of my knives. Personally i believe there is always room for improvement, and that?s what I?m here for. To learn more about the trade.
Thank you all for the space. Here are some of the knives I've made. (all coments or critics are welcome). I know they are not perfect. This was my FIRST one... Last edited by Medevack1; 12-19-2013 at 09:32 AM. |

Welcome to the forums Fermin, and thank you for your service to the country. It sounds like you're well on your way with knife making but, if you have questions, just ask. We have a Chat Room on Sunday afternoons that you might enjoy (see the Sticky thread at the top of the forum for details). Hope to see you there ...

Welcome Fermin to Knife Network and thanks for your service! Definitely get on the Ray Roger's chat Sunday evenings and attend any Hammer-Ins in your neck of the woods and try to visit a local knifemaker. There are quite a few I believe in NC. Keep up the good work!

Merry Christmas. I can only reiterate what the others have said, your service to this country is greatly appreciated. Nice start on your knives. You can get a lot of face to face support from the folks in the NC Guild, good people.
Not to take away from the fine forums here on KNF, lot of good information and help here, but also avail yourself to as much of the "hands-on" exposure as you can. Really reduces the learning curve. Know it's a pretty good ride from W-S to Blairsville, GA, but you are definitely welcome to attend my Trackrock Hammer-in the last weekend in March -28,29,30. Bowie will also be having one around that time up in Knoxville, TN (we are usually within a few weeks of each other). Watch for the info posts that will be coming out. You can learn a lot about the basics at these hammer-ins, see different setups, learn tips and tricks, and make a lot of friends while having fun. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
