Any side-effects for knife industry?

Hi all,
new to the forums. Still trying to get things in order to start trying to make a knife or two.
Since everyone here knows more about steel than I do, does this technology have any benefits for the knife industry?

Opinions are greatly appreciated.

This was discussed on another board rather extensively. Some of the metallurgists who posted there had the feeling that this was really not a new proceedure based on the article. I don't know if it has any real application for knifemaking. Toughness is only one physical characteristic of steel that has to be considered in the production of knives. It also depends on whether or not they are talking about upper or lower bainite and the percentage it in the structure. The alloy that this process is applied to also would make a great deal of difference as far as knife making is concerned. There are also more conventional ways to produce bainetic steel.

Indeed, nothing new. Laser heating, induction heating, and friction stir heating all do the same thing. They refine the grain structure. This will be just one more method of fast heating. (But, hey, it's good to have more tools to choose from.)
