Home stabilizing and die?

Anyone out there tried to dye at the same time as doing home stabilizing? I am going to get rigged up soon and have some plain maple that I want to experiment on. Any thoughts? Dan

I have used nelsonite in the past which I added dye to see how much it penetrated. I used the dry powder for baking and pastry it seems to be really potent so a little goes a long way not to metion its powder so it doesn't thin down your solution. Just a thought but...there have been past "disscussions" on were to get nelsonite you may want to check out custom pool cue supply places nelsonite is what most of them use to stabilize the cues. Its, were I bought some of mine...although it's never cheap.

Ive done a few batches in the last couple weeks of stabilizing hardwoods and antler but not dieing. Ive been using Minwax, Im out of Minwax now but Im going to switch to Nelsonite because of the good things ive heard. The supplier I will be using im sure could answer that question about the dieing. Hopefully one of these guys can see this post and reply, ive wondered about this myself.

I have had good results with oak and walnut using Minwax hardner, oil based stain (about a 1/2 each) and a little mineral spirits in my vacuum set up. Will be posting a walnut handled athame from this soon.

Have also used strait polyurathane or minwax polyshades.

I wait until the material is close to final shape, pull it down for a week. If it gets too light after sanding, I rub on some more before polishing.

I try to keep away from the the nastier chemicals. I wear gloves and use forced ventalation even when using alcohol (but not for beer)

My handles probably won't be found 200 years from now but seem to handle a fair amount of abuse.
