Other than Tandy
Does anyone sell belt blanks or smaller pieces of GOOD leather other than Tandy ? I wish I could buy Wicket and Craig belt blanks or cut leather even at a higher than normal rate. I dont always have 100 bucks for a side to just make a nice check book cover but I would like some nice "russett" color.
thanks Dave |

Dave---Dave Tanner located in Boston, Indiana has a large leather supply store in which he has a little bit of EVERYTHING for the leather craftsman or upholsterer. I do not have the address in front of me but Boston is a very small town so should not have trouble contacting Dave. A while back I used to purchase excellent quality belt strips 1 1/2" by 72" for $2.50. At that time Tandy was getting over $8.00 for a strip that was not as good. Tanner (really his name) is a good man to do business with and is easy to talk to. He did not have a catalog at that time. He has a large operation as he took over a two story old high school building and it is crammed to the rafters with leather, buckles, tools and all sort of goodies. ---Sandy---

Dave,
There is a place in mesquite called "The Leather Factory" and last time I was in there you coulde get all different sizes of stuff. They just asked me HOW MUCH I wanted. Since I was there with a friend I did not want any but they did ask and I got the impression I could have said any amount. It is less than a mile from the Mesquite Rodeo (where the knife show used to be held). Might want to give them a try. |

I am wanting USA preminum grade leather strap or pieces like one would by from Wickett and Craig. The stuff at Leather Factory and Jantz is the same Mexico/Foreign hobby leather.
Is the stuff from Dave Tanner USA leather ? Tandy leather hit with neatsfoot oil is the same color after it dries that it was before the oil. Wickett/Craig turns a nice saddle brown with a light coat of oil.If you havent used both you dont know what you missing thanks Dave |

Dave, Carl----I, too, gave Tanner one of my business cards and told him that I had no Tax number as I have VERY little sales in my home state and can not collect state taxes elsewhere. The belt strips I received were all top quality but I have no knowledge of where they were tanned or by whom. They carved and stamped beautifully, dyed very nicely. As far as the coloring when using oil, I am in the dark as I do not oil the belts that I make. On one rare occasion I did receive a strip that was a little too firm to carve without forcing the swivel knife---which is a no-no! In recent years I have not made many belts but stayed with sheaths and holsters. The strips I received from Tanner were in the 9/10 ounce range with smooth (probably pasted) flesh sides and I found to be exceptionaly satisfactory and the prices were the best in the business. I did visit his school warehouse about 6 years ago and was astounded by the amount of stock he carried. ---Sandy---
