Contact Wheel

Hi,
My contact wheel is rounded off on the edges. What is a good way to square it back up?

Has anyone ever had the rubber replaced on one at Chicago rubber?

Thanks,
Doug Adams

Hi Doug, the square the edges, the wheel has to be turned down or re-treaded. If it's a Bader wheel, you can send it to them and they will tell you if it needs to be resurfaced or if they can just turn it down. Last I talked with them, it was $20 to turn down an 8" wheel. They send their wheels out to Chicago rubber for resurfacing, afik.

Doug, the first thing I did when I got my Square Wheel 19 years ago was put a radius, about 1/8", on each corner of the wheel, and did the same when I replaced it with a Rietveldt wheel 3 years ago. I use those radii to help form a radius at the bevel's plunges. If I want a more sweeping plunge line the radius on the wheel makes it a lot easier to form it than a sharper corner would. So I don't know that I'd want to actually remove those radiused corners, just make them even.

My wear plate on my flat platen also has a 1/8" radius on each edge.

David
