Hot waxing sheaths?

Okay, here are a few other questions. I've started using a 50-50 blend of pure bees wax and 100% neatsfoot oil for finishing my leather sheaths.

How hot should the mixture be before you dunk your sheath in it? What?s too hot? How long should the sheath remain submerged in the mixture?

I think I?m getting decent results, but I?m still not one hundred percent sure I?m getting complete penetration into the leather. Can anyone offer me some guidance on the matter?

I use about the same mix.You should have your sheath warmed up a little. I put mine under a light bulb.
An article I read said 300 degrees was a good temp. That scared me cause thats hot for wax.
I like to use a piece of scrap leather and keep dunking a piece into the wax until it doesn't coat but gets absorbed into the leather. 300 does work but I think 250 or so works to.Just try a few small scraps.
i think it was Barney and Loveless that used this temp.
Due to the dangers of getting wax this hot I don't recommend this method.CMA
Makes the sheath very hard, and it will probaly out last the knife.
Take care
TJ

Thanks TJ. I heated the mixture to the point where all the wax melted plus a little bit more. I'm not quite sure how hot it was in the end, but when I dunked the sheath, the mixture around it started to bubble. That worried me. I thought maybe I overdid it, but it seems to have come out all right. I only left the sheath in for maybe 30 seconds.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. How long do you leave the sheath in the wax/oil mixture?
