Leather Alternative
I usually use leather and wood for sheaths, as well as carbon steel. I have deviated with my last project, a canoeing knife for myself. I told myself the only time I would ever use stainless steel again is if I went back to Canada, and I said I'd never go back. Well I signed up for a half season as a guide so . . .
Anyways, what is a water proof/resistant alternative to leather? Other than Kydex (I don't like it). Nylon canvas kinda material? Thanks |

Have you ever thought about Neoprene?
You would have to protect the inside of the sheath from the point of blade and sharp edge. I would use eyelet style rivets to secure the edge of the sheath. For a cleaner look you could wrap the edge with leather before placing the eyelets or rivets and use Muskrat oil to protect the leather. If you chose not to wrap the edge of the sheath in leather you and seal with a silicone type sealant or wrap in another pliable water resistant material. But what do I know. I am just a Fly Fisher that has taken a lot of ribbing over his Neoprene Sheaths for his filet knives, but they work for me I am not a sheath maker and will probably get eat up on this post. That was a great question, Thanks for posting. Jeff Last edited by xspook2158; 04-23-2012 at 05:43 AM. |

I am not using leather because it is very likely that this knife and sheath will be submerged daily with only a couple hours to dry out each evening if the weather is nice.

cordura makes a good sheath but it will need a hard liner to protect from the knife edge
tho my dive safety knife doesn't have a liner it is a lambs foot serrated blade so not likely to cut the sheath especially as it shouldn't be taken in and out very often if at all emergencies only heres one in a Spec ops sheath they use a std plastic liner (well more a squashed pipe) I made a Kydex replacment for this knife for retention as it has no cross guards it jsut bolts in using the bottom hole |

I am going with duck canvas I think, to match my pack, with a kydex liner.
