12" butcher knife.

Here's one I'm close to finished with.

It's 1084 with loveless bolts, black and green drab G-10, I put a light patina on the blade.

Looks like it might work pretty well. When do you put your mark on your blade? It looks to me like you mark the blade before you're done with sanding or polishing because the mark doesn't have any color in it....

It's funny you should ask, I got the etch O matic all set up, poured my etching liquid on a plate and started etching, after a minute or so I said to myself self something isn't right. I was etching with the cleaner. It's etched, just not as good as it could be. Getting old sucks! Lol!

OK, but something still isn't right since the mark should be black. If the mark isn't black and you aren't polishing the black out of the mark then there are only two remaining possibilities that I can think of.

One, you're not using the correct etchant. In truth, most any etchant should work but we'll come back to this if the second option isn't the problem.

The second possibility is that you are not etching with both DC and AC current. The DC digs the impression and the AC puts the black oxide in it (I think, could be the other way but that really isn't important. The important part is that you need both).

Tape the stencil to the blade with Scotch tape, add enough tape around the stencil to be sure that the etching pad cannot touch the steel. Put the etchant on the pad, soak it well, then blot it dry with a paper towel to the point where there is still liquid in the pad but not enough to allow it to drip.

Clip that extra alligator clip into the alligator clip that is part of the etcher. This cause the current to be DC. Apply the pad to the stencil for 3 seconds, raise it for 2 seconds, and repeat that process for a total of 20 seconds. You should be able to see a wet black logo through your stencil at this point. If not, that means you don't have a good connection so check the clip for corrosion.

Remove the extra alligator clip and repeat the 3 second 2 second process, the mark should look even darker. Now lift the corner of the stencil a little so you can see part of the mark. If for any reason the mark didn't take you can put the stencil down and try again. Otherwise, remove the stencil and run some cold water over the mark on the blade. Then wash the stencil in cold water carefully and thoroughly.

Allow the mark to set for at least 15 minutes, an hour is better. You may see a brown halo around the mark at this point. Take a tiny dab of SemiChrome polish and polish the blade. SemiChrome will remove the brown stain without removing the black (unless you just go ape crazy with your polishing) .

If you do find that you aren't getting a good electrical connection clean off both alligator clips and also clean the screws that secure the metal screen. All of that stuff is part of the electrical circuit ...

What switch? Is there an Etch-O-Matic that has a switch? If there is a switch, or if you have an etcher that isn't an Etch-O-Matic, then I would expect the switch to select either AC or DC current. In order to get a proper etch you would first etch with DC and then etch again with AC ....

You would need both as described earlier. First etch, then mark, I should think ...
