Straight or Diluted oil for O1 Steel??
What should I use for Quench material for O1 steel. Should I use straight 5 or 10w30 motor oil or should dilute it with some diesel fuel (read that somewhere) or anything else that works best. The steel is 1/4x2x12 inches. Thanks a bunch.

Exude, I use primarily O-1 and I use olive or vegatable oil.It cleans up better and smells better.I tried the motor oil method years ago and while it worked it was still a mess and the results in performance were not any better.Hope this helps.Dave

Exactly what Dave said. Vegetable oil or Crisco oil works great.

I have been using Transmission Fluid for some time now. It works. However, it stinks. So I tried Canola Oil for the first time the other day and it worked just fine. The knife hardened up and when I was tempering the blade in the wife's oven, she asked, "Gee, smells good in here. What are you cooking?".

I like a "Goddards Goop" concoction. I did not have any pure pariffin, so I used the wax from a skeeter chaser candle bucket. It don't smell bad and the bugs stay away on quench night. Ha!

The best that I have found to stop all of the slag and is fairly safe is mineral oil veternarian grade. You can get it a most feed stores and tractor supply. About $10 a gallon and I have been using the same gallon for 3 years. Olive oil works good too, but it can go sour.
