Changing Epoxy Color
I am making a knife handle from a chamoix horn, which polishes up to a beautiful black. While routing it out to accept a blade tang, I accidentally made a small hole in the outside of the horn.
I plan to set the blade in epoxy. Is there any way I can color the epoxy black so it doesn't show at the small hole I made in the horn? Or are there any other suggestions for repairing the hole? Thanks, Dave |

Get my best epoxy coloring affects with a product called Alumilite (sp?). Comes in several different colors and is used by model makers to color epoxies, waterglass, and resins. Can find it at most serious model/hobby stores. One bottle will last you a long time, only takes a small drop. It was formulated to use with epoxies. Tried Testors enamel paint a few times (gets suggested/used often), but it weakened the strength of the epoxy when I tested it.

I have used powered lamp black for years to color epoxy black. It takes just a small amount. Problem is, I bought 1 lb about 20 years ago, still have a lot left, and no idea where I got it from. Haven't seen it in years. If you want a little, pm me your contact info. and I'll stick some in an envelope. ...Teddy

I got a little bit of pigments they use to color paint. It comes in a variety of colors. It cost me a dollar or two at the hardware store for a squirt of it in a little plastic container. I only use a tiny drop at the end of a toothpick, it mixes real well with epoxy.

Why not mix a bit of horn dust into your epoxy and fill the hole that way? I do that with wood and glue. Sure works!

+1 for ckluftinger - mix some horn dust in with the epoxy - that will solve your problem.
